Kampala Night Tape is the first thing Atmosferal ever released: seventy-five cassettes, a mixtape by DJ Flo Moon, recorded in one sitting at her home in Kampala.
Florence, aka DJ Flo Moon, is a DJ, trumpet player and music teacher from Kampala, Uganda. She plays trumpet in HHY & The Kampala Unit, has toured Europe every year since 2018, and her DJ sets at Nyege Nyege Festival are the kind that leave a dancefloor somewhere else. Back home she teaches children and is turning a house in Kampala into a school for them, a project funded with help from Roskilde Festival.
The tape is a DJ at work. No prepared playlist survived contact with the mix: she sat down with headphones, played a track, felt where it wanted to go and followed it. “When you prepare the playlist, it doesn’t come from here,” she says, pointing at her heart. “Take the vibe and respond, and see what comes back.” The result moves the way her 2 a.m. sets do, from club pressure into trance and back, with a few wobbly transitions left in on purpose. The label prints it on the sleeve: no AI. It is a performance, not a product.
The object matches the music. Pisitakun Kuantalaeng’s cover is an ink drawing of a horned motorcycle wheel wrapped in chains, the title hand-lettered into the tyre; the back is a dense pattern of black branches. The J-card sets artist, title, label and year in small bordered boxes like archive labels on wild art. The shells are blue, the single colour this release allows itself on the label’s black-and-white ground.
Atmosferal opens its catalogue with a mixtape by a woman from Kampala on purpose. The label wants its roster split evenly between male and female artists, and it wants the East African club scene heard on its own terms, in the West, as the living culture it is.
